Guess what guys? Its CHOCOLATE week. Ok, maybe not in Australia exactly…it’s in the UK…but I don’t care – I will take any excuse to eat extra chocolate. So it calls that I do a chocolate-related recipe. So here is a chocolate banana milkshake, completely free of gluten, dairy, without any added refined sugars.
When I got my wisdom teeth out a month or so ago, not only did I look like one very unattractive chubby chipmunk, but I practically lived off smoothies and milkshakes. Occasionally I could suck on some mushy food but nothing bet being able to suck something cold and chocolately through a straw. I had this milkshake almost every day before I could open my mouth again properly and it made sure I was actually getting food into me!
The frozen banana makes this milkshake super thick without having to add stacks of commercial sugar-filled ice-cream. If you don’t like bananas, you could substitute it with ice-cream if you don’t mind a bit of sugar…or there are lots of great dairy free ice cream recipes out there that you can make. Nothing beats homemade ice cream!
This time my milkshake recipe serves two, because milkshakes are something me and one of my best friends, rachel, used to make each other when we went over to each other’s houses. Such an easy snack to whip up when you have a friend over and you can actually tell them it’s mostly healthy…a serve of fruit, a serve of calcium (make sure the non-dairy milk is calcium fortified), some small dose of healthy fats from the nut meal and heaps of antioxidants from the chocolate (especially if you use cacao powder instead of cocoa powder-there is a big difference).
If you want to make it even healthier, you could substitute the chocolate ganache for extra cacao powder…but I will be honest – it tastes way better with the ganache. If you want it even milkier, use all soy milk – I usually go for a mix between soy and unsweetened almond though.
This recipe is for you rach, I will make it for you next time you visit me in Adelaide!
CHOCOLATE BANANA MILKSHAKE (GLUTEN+ DAIRY+ EGG FREE + VEGAN*)
– 2 medium bananas, pre-cut and frozen
– 2 cups non-dairy milk (I used half soy and half unsweetened almond)
– 2 tablespoons cocoa or cacao powder
– 2 tablespoons almond flour/meal
– 3 tablespoons chocolate ganache (chilled)
– optional: sweetener (rice malt syrup, honey* or stevia), to taste
– garnish: chocolate ganache (in liquid form) and chopped dairy free 85% or 70% cocoa chocolate
*omit honey for vegan option
Place all ingredients (except the garnish obviously…) into a high-powered blender and blend until nice and smooth – make sure there are no banana chunks left over.
Pour into two glasses and drizzle some chocolate ganache and sprinkle with chopped chocolate. Savour the healthy, chilled, chocolate-ness with a friend.
